Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting suicidal ideation of the middle and high school students in Korea and to provide an important basis for juveniles" suicide prevention through the understanding of the causal relationship. The data in this study came from 2008 Social Statistics Survey conducted by the National Statistical Office. The sample is composed of 2,541 middle and high school students. The statistical significance was tested by Chi-Square test and SEM(Structural Equation Modeling).
The results were as follows.
First, the rate of suicidal ideation was 10.2%. Second, there were significant differences of suicidal ideation in the gender and housing type. Third, health-related variables and suicidal ideation showed a statistically significant variable. Fourth, Students who were unsatisfied with life subjectively were higher than students who were satisfied. Fifth, in the family relationship satisfaction, including satisfaction with parents, all variables were significant statistically. Sixth, in all the stress, including family life stress, all stress variables were statistically significant.
Reviewing the relationship between variables derived from SEM(Structural Equation Modeling), we can see that the stress of middle and high school students impacts on suicidal ideation directly. In addition stress was negatively affected on the satisfaction between family members.
Finally we can find that the starting line of adolescent suicide is stress. In considering that the sources of adolescent stress are in the home and school, we also should find a solution in the home and school. Accordingly the supportive system in the home and school, youth emotional supportive basis, should be established.
